题目 As countries develop, more and more people buy and use
their own cars. Do you think the advantages of this trend for
individuals outweigh the disadvantages for the
environment?
范文 Mass car ownership in many cities has become a concern to
increasingly more people today. Nevertheless, owing a car is
still seen as a desirable option to many. While some might
argue for the convenience of having a car, I think the wide
use of cars have compromised the environment in an
alarming rate. People today cross towns and cities in their
cars for work purposes and lei sure activities. This mode of
transport grants people the flexibility of moving around
without the hassles of having to book tickets for airplane,
train or bus travel. Personal independence derived from this
also means people can go for shopping and other pursuits
whenever and at any time without depend/ing on fixed
schedules of public transport systems, which can be
important when there is severe deficiency of public
transport.
However, the effects of car pollution are widespread,
affecting air/soil and water quality. Nitrous oxide
contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer which shields
the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Nitrogen dioxide and other chemicals mix with rainwater to
create acid rain that damages crops, forests and other
vegetation and buildings. Oil and fuel spills from cars seep
into the soil near highways, and fuel and particulates from
vehicle emissions contaminate lakes. rivers and wetlands.
Besides, car pollution is one of the major causes of global
warming which is believed to be one of the most urgent
environmental issues faced by mankind. Cars emit carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases, contributing a major
part of total global warming pollution. Greenhouse gases
trap heat in the atmosphere and it causes worldwide
temperatures to rise. Warmer global temperatures affect
farming, wildlife, sea levels and natural landscapes. To
conclude, over-dependence on private vehicles and lace of
the aware ness of environmental protection of the public
have caused immediate and long-term effects on the
environment, but efforts could be made to reverse.
