参考范文
From the perspective of some people, drug companies have the obligation to lend a helping hand to countries in poverty by spending money on developing medicine for them. Others, however, hold the view that it is their principal duty to earn money so as to make sure their ability of sustainable development. Personally, I find the latter one more convincing.
Those who support the idea of aiding countries in need do have their own justifications. First of all, people in those countries are commonly faced with the problem of lacking trained doctors and medicine, the result of which is considered to have greatly affected local residents’ health and apparently there is a considerable amount of influence on the country on a whole. The Republic of Botswana , a remote malaria-ridden area in Africa , for instance, has a fatality rate of 66% among all age groups infected by malaria, including 71% for aged below 5. It still draws a great deal of attention around the globe for its suffering. Furthermore, what is now happening there might as well put nearly half the world's population, about 3.2 billion people, at risk from the disease, according to WHO. In other words, a wider range of population can be inflicted if nothing is done to cope with it. Besides, it’s a great chance to promote the company’s positive image as well as its reputation. As it’s widely acknowledged that these underdeveloped countries could become robust emerging markets, building a socially responsible image not only boosts these companies’ brand visibility but also helps them tap into markets with enormous potential. Therefore, it is imperative for drug companies to provide those vulnerable countries with medical treatment and other humanitarian aids.
Nevertheless, it is understandable why other people are against the previous theory. While it is beneficial to actively tackling health issues in other countries, never should one forget what’s the key role of an enterprise -- making profit. Undoubtedly, only in that way can businesses, no matter how big, get a chance to survive, let alone further thriving, which is especially true in such a sluggish global economic environment. Also, an enormous sum of fund is needed to search for new drugs, considering the difficulties those companies confront, from hiring well-qualified professionals to constructing state-of-art laboratories, after all, without research and development infrastructures, hardly can any firm innovate and invent new types of vaccine. For instance, research and development expenditures accounts for 30% or even more of its revenue on scientific experiment for a successful medical corporation on average in developed countries. Thus, it is suggested that it would be better to fulfill their basic function before moving along.
In conclusion, while some people have reasons to believe it is the right thing to do to focus on helping poorer nations, I tend to think that drug companies must survive in order to develop and target for researching into new medicine.
