Must Knows.

Most people today live a fast-paced life, and even if they travel, there is not much time for staying too long, which makes it hard to get to know the cities they first visit very well. While some people might prefer to go to some historical sites or markets, I would spend most of my time in restaurants and cafes to know the place better if I know that I will be gone soon.
Touring historical sites in a city is not an ideal way to familiarize ourselves with it if we do not have enough time. Since most historical sites are not located in the center of cities, they could be very distant from each other, which makes it very time-consuming to commute between them. Also, historical sites like palaces and tombs are usually quite large places in which people are only allowed to walk while visiting, and touring just one single place could cost us a whole day or more. Thus, spending time visiting historical sites is not even a practical option when time is against us.
Shopping in markets might be the best way to prove to others that I have been somewhere when I go back home, but it does not help me know a city better. What are people buying the most in markets and shops when traveling to a new place? Mostly souvenirs, things that are only available where they travel. These things do represent the city's culture and history to some extent, but who has time to care about and dig into it when shopping in a noisy and crowded market? What is most likely to happen if people choose to go to markets and shops is that they spend a lot of money while not being able to know the city any better.
If I know that I will be leaving soon, I will spend some time in restaurants or cafes, trying to understand the city more by having some local cuisine and chatting with people next to me. Every city has its local cuisine that not only tastes good but also tells stories, and eating in a restaurant gives me a chance to read or hear about these stories and thus I can learn more about the city. Also, people having meals or a cup of coffee are not always in a hurry to leave, so they could feed me with a lot of information about the city as either a local or a traveler who has a lot more time than I do.
Traveling to a place is always a great opportunity and we should try not to waste it. If there is only a limited amount of time for me to spend at a place I first visit, I would go to restaurants and cafes to make the most out of this journey. (Written by Zirui Wang)
