Heidi《
Heidi《
1.“No one knows what makes the old man up there tick!He wants nothing to do with anyone,he doesn’t set foot inside a church year in,year out…”
tick这个英语单词本来是指钟表的滴滴嗒嗒声,在这里的意思是“导致某人特定行为或思维方式的原因”,what makes somebody behave or think in the way they do。
2.Barbel had long wished to know how matters stood with the Alp Uncle.
how matters stand(with)的意思是:现在的情况怎么样,现在是什么进展,What's new?
3.Prättigau isn't such a terrible gossip mill, and as for me I can hold my tongue if need be.
gossip mill:rumor mill
4.“…and his brother, who was likewise reduced to beggary, was so sick at heart that he went into the wide world, not a soul knows where.”
was reduced to(a particular state):to cause that person or thing to be in that state
5.Peter promptly thrust it deep in his pocket, his face beaming from side to side, for such riches rarely came his way.
come one's way:happen to sb;come to one's possession
比起“happen to”这么平平无奇的表达,come one's way更形象,“落到某人面前”。
6.…but at the mention of eating she felt pangs of hunger…
这里pangs of hunger就是肚子饿得胃绞痛的感觉,类似的表达还有:a pang of guilt/a pang of disappointment。
7.…she drank her milk and looked the picture of contentment.
比起是she was content或she looked content等general的描述,looked the picture of contentment更形象,你甚至可以看到她心满意足的样子。类似的表达还有looked the picture of health。
8.Heidi followed him step by step, her eyes fixed unerringly on what he was doing, and none of it failed to interest her.
如果我来写这句话,我可能就会写一句简单的“She was interested in everything.”。
但none of it failed to interest her更生动,尤其是fail这个词,让整句话拟人化,活灵活现。
9.The idea that she should pay someone a visit was a new one for Heidi, but it quickly took root in her mind…
Root是植物的根,当an idea take root in one's mind,那么这个idea就像植物的根部一样,扎在了脑海里。
10.He left the Alp Uncle out of sorts.
11.The housekeeper said they were looking for a quite unspoilt child with an original way about her, something out of the common run.
something out of the common run,就是不一般、独特的人或物。
12.…and when a child has an opportunity in her grasp such as Heidi…
Has an opportunity in her grasp给人的感觉是机会近在眼前,伸伸手就能抓住。
13.This is her first time in a gentleman's house and her manners want polish.
我挑这句话也是因为它的角度,want在这里拟人化了,比直接说"we need to polish her manners"惊艳多了。
14.“The creature has no notion how to behave.”
15.…and he racked his brains for something to ask for, just to have her out of the room for a few moments.
16.Heidi’s loss of spirits did not escape Grandmamma’s notice.
not a word escaped his lips the rest of the evening
When I strove to speak,a few inarticulate sounds alone escaped my lips.
A despairing cry escaped the pale lips of Mercédès;
17.The doctor stepped forward.“This is my department,Sesemann.Go back and sit in your chair…”
18.The old man walked on in silence. Then, picking up his train of thought,he muttered…
train:an orderly succession
