Some citizens think that the state ought to offer economic support to all types of artists;whereas,there are those who argue that such aid is simply a needless use of tax revenue.This essay shall explore both viewpoints;however,in my opinion,I believe financially supporting artists is essential in maintaining a healthy society.
One of the primary reasons for people opposing the authority’s monetary assistance to professionals in the artistic community is that they believe art as a whole does not play a crucial role in a nation’s progress.Unlike industries,including information technology,oil and gas,construction,and manufacturing that sustain residents’lives while at the same time generating a majority of the country’s GDP,artists tend to produce no such value.In essence,artists can be thought of as producing items that add little economic benefit to both the average person’s life and that of the country.
Those who favor the notion of governmental financial support,however,point to‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’in order to illustrate that upon satisfying physiological and safety needs,human beings turn to love and belonging,esteem,and self-actualization,which are needs that music,painting,and literature can help satisfy.Monetary assistance to artists,subsequently,is not only justifiable,but also vital.Art,even though it may never contribute significantly to a country’s GDP,is imperative in nurturing the spiritual aspect of people’s lives,and in fact,indirectly influences the economy since a happy people tend to be more productive than when not content.
In conclusion,although a segment of the citizenry believe that monetary aid is a waste of tax revenue,in my opinion,arts and artists form a substantial element in the evolution of any successful civilization,and thus,such support is indispensable.
