I strongly disagree with the idea that people should not try to prevent species from becoming extinct. This essay will explore both the natural occurrence of extinction and the unprecedented impact of human activities, highlighting why active intervention is essential.
First, extinction events in the natural world, such as the disappearance of the dinosaurs, typically occurred over extended periods due to gradual environmental changes or catastrophic events. These processes allowed ecosystems to adapt and new species to evolve. In contrast, the current wave of extinctions is happening at an accelerated pace due to human activities, including habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and overexploitation of resources. This rapid rate does not allow ecosystems sufficient time to adapt, leading to widespread ecological imbalance.
Second, every species plays a specific role in its ecosystem, contributing to biodiversity and ecological health. The loss of a single species can disrupt food chains, leading to unforeseen consequences for other species and the environment. For example, the extinction of bees, crucial pollinators in many ecosystems, would drastically impact food production and biodiversity. Protecting species is, therefore, integral to maintaining the balance and health of ecosystems, which in turn support human life.
Moreover, there is an ethical dimension to consider. As the dominant species on the planet, humans have a moral responsibility to protect other species from extinction, especially when such extinction is mainly induced by human activities. In conclusion, while extinction is indeed a natural process, the current crisis driven by human actions is not. The ecological and ethical reasons outlined above underscore the importance of actively working to prevent species extinction. It is imperative for humanity to recognize its impact on the natural world and take responsibility for preserving the biodiversity that sustains life on earth. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the idea that there is no reason to prevent species from becoming extinct.
