People have contrasting views about whether middle school students should be required to take all subjects as compulsory or be allowed to choose subjects based on their interests. In my view, I would advocate for the latter, as it benefits their long-term development.
Proponents of compulsory subjects argue that a broad academic foundation is crucial for a student’s future success. They claim that middle school is the stage where students should focus on essential academic disciplines such as math, language, and science, which are seen as prerequisites for higher education. Indeed, secondary school curricula are designed to prepare students for college-level studies. If students do not perform well in these national exams, they might miss their opportunity to access higher education. While this concern is valid, I believe that focusing solely on compulsory subjects limits students’ potential and it ignores the diverse talents and interests that could lead them to personal fulfillment and success.
